Dishing the Dirt

Go back to the land in Prince Edward County.

Thanks to its limestone soil and microclimate, Ontario’s Prince Edward County has long been an agricultural hotbed. Now big-name foodies such as Toronto writer Marnie Woodrow (who opened Saylor’s Café in Bloomfield) are making the rural relocation – there are even whispers that celebrity chef and weekender Jamie Kennedy is opening a bistro here. “We have the closest terroir to Burgundy in the world,” says local wine guru Norman Hardie. This year, the County earned DVA status (Designated Viticulture Area), which pairs nicely with the VQA status (Vintners Quality Alliance) of 10 of its mom-and-pop vineyards. “You caught the fever yet?” asked one resident, noticing the real estate listings sticking out of our bag. Which makes you wonder if this just might be the next Vancouver Island.
