The Beef on Weck Sandwich
By David McGimpsey
Home
You might think that Buffalo could not give more to the culinary world after bestowing upon us the beloved Buffalo chicken wing – if only because it reduces ordering to one phrase: “Cold beer, hot wings.” But the Queen City of the Lakes is generous, and among its most Buffaloan fare is the Beef on Weck. This old-style sandwich features hand-carved roast beef lovingly stacked inside a salty German kimmelweck roll. (The roll gives the sandwich a pretzel-like crunch that perfectly balances the rich meat.) Every local has his favourite version, but you’ll find a classic at Charlie the Butcher’s, where Charlie himself oversees his beef empire while wearing a hard hat. And because one of its locations is less than two kilometres from the airport, you can get there chop-chop.
