A PEI retreat with as much character as the folks who live there.
By Craille Maguire Gillies
In Victoria by-the-Sea, the main drag is really the only drag, and the de facto meeting place is not the usual seaside wharf but the kitschy Landmark Café. Visitors and locals gather here for a beer after a show at the long-running Victoria Playhouse, where Norm Foster plays are a staple. The town is like Cheers: Everybody knows your name – at least by day two. Many of the town’s 100 or so residents are artists and entrepreneurs (the number of artisans per capita in PEI is among the highest in Canada), and there are whispers of development. The buzz around town: a swish 25-room waterfront hotel, Victoria Harbour Inn, planned for late 2009. Meanwhile, frequent visitor Sam Sniderman (a.k.a. Sam the Record Man), who summers nearby, is building Dunes View Farm Vineyard in Souris. With even the island’s farthest points only a day-trip away, Victoria proves that small is beautiful.
