Where to Stay
The Royal Suite at Westmark Whitehorse Hotel (the Yukon’s largest) boasts a spacious corner layout, a Jacuzzi and a regal history: Prince Charles stayed here when he breezed through town.

Opening this month right by the airport, Skky Hotel was designed by former Marvel Comics illustrator Tom Wegrzyn. Executive suites have gas fireplaces, while rooms offer two Whitehorse firsts – radiant heating in first-floor rooms and 24-hour room service.

At Inn on the Lake, an upscale bed and breakfast (think log cabin luxe) about 50 kilometres southeast of town, dinners are meat-plus-three events. Its remote sister property, Inn on the River, is a float plane ride away.

Where to Eat
Housed in one of the city’s oldest buildings, the popular Klondike Rib & Salmon BBQ makes our new favourite comfort food: fish ’n’ chips using Alaskan halibut. The bison chili is a solid runner-up.
2116 2nd Ave., 867-667-7554
A 15-minute drive from town, the North Bean Coffee House serves fair-trade, organic coffee in biodegradable cups, best enjoyed in the manicured garden.

What to Do
Bring your binoculars: With five habitats and 700 acres, Yukon Wildlife Preserve offers up a Noah’s Ark of creatures, including muskox and woodland caribou. Also look for the lynx – from the safety of the tour bus.

Resources
Mac’s Fireweed Books may just have the world’s biggest selection of new and out-of-print books about the Yukon, including requisite titles by Pierre Berton and Robert Service. We also came across out-of-print editions of Jack London’s Call of the Wild.
